Description

ELL Teachers instruct students whose first language is not English. The goal is to teach the
English Language Proficiency Standard Course of Study. The ELL Teacher instructs English
language learners to read, speak, listen, and write English, so they can achieve grade level
proficiency in all academic areas. They must be highly knowledgeable in the content and

structure of the English language as well as the methodology for teaching English to non-
native speakers.

 

Responsibilities

  • Teaches the English Language Proficiency Standard Course of Study, instructs pupils in classroom in accordance with approved methods of language instruction.
  • Coordinates and administers the W-APT/ACCESS English language tests.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials. Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers to scaffold and support students’ access to grade level content.
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instructional time.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals.
  • Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicates these objectives to the students.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
  • Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student’s progress and interprets the school program.
  • Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems. Co-teaches in classrooms as deemed possible.
  • Provides staff development about Limited English Proficient needs at school level.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and through self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory; LEP testing documentation and records.
  • Participates in curriculum development programs as required.

Requirements

  • Highly Qualified designation in ELL Certification in additional core content licensure is required
  • Proficiency in Spanish preferred
